"Come home with me." Her words were barely audible, but their impact was like a sucker punch to the gut.

I leaned back against the car, unable to meet her gaze. "Kerry," I started slowly, unsure of what to say. My body was more than willing to follow her anywhere. But my heart wasn't so quick to fall in line. How did I know she wouldn't try to slip back into her closet again? Did I really only want a few fucks in the closet? Or was there more to it?

"No," she murmured. "Not that."

Then what? Before I could give my thoughts a voice, her fingers brushed my cheek then tilted my chin up. I looked at her, waiting for an explanation...and saw the tears glittering dimly in the streetlight's glow. Again I spoke her name.

"I just want to know you're really okay, Sandy. You have no idea how scared I was..."

I knew, and I couldn't let her go back to that place, so I leaned in and kissed her. Just enough to show her I understood what she was asking me. And to accept her request. Her body trembled as I pulled her close again.

"Take me home, Kerry," I murmured into her hair, blinking back my own tears.
