S8x10: "I'll Be Home For Christmas"by PKR

Original Air Date: December 13, 2001

Scene 1

As Kerry is handing Abbey a specimen for the lab Sandy walks into the ER, dragging 2 screaming kids. All 3 are yelling, and Sandy says, "Hey, I've got a couple of kids here. Snow-related injuries." The kids are shouting, "Freak. Freak. Freak" at each other.  Sandy tries to control them. She stops and shouts at them, "Quiet! Hey! Hey! Shut up both of you! Shut up! And be glad you're not sleepin' in a grate or eating out of the trash!"

At this point Kerry steps up and tells Haleh, "Get these two out of here", then turns to Sandy and asks, " Since when did Fire & Rescue start transporting pediatric walk-in cases?" Obviously exasperated, Sandy replies, "Since these two took headers out by the firehouse."

Kerry asks, "You notify the parents?" and they start walking back down the hall as Sandy sighs and says, "Yeah, I left word. Hey, you didn't call."

Kerry responds with a stall, "Sorry?" and Sandy goes on as Kerry turns them toward the lounge door, "You didn't call about getting together. What happened? You change your mind?"

As she pushes the lounge door open, wanting to continue the conversation more privately, saying "Uh, no, I was just...” Lily appears saying "Dr. Weaver, Exam 1's having chest pain."

Kerry attempts to put her off with "I'll be right there"… so she and Sandy can continue, but Lily carries on with "Dynamic changes on the EKG", indicating it can't wait. Sandy and Kerry look back at each other in resignation and Sandy says, "I'll let you get back to work."

Kerry follows Lily to the desk giving instructions and as Lily leaves, Kerry turns to watch regretfully as Sandy walks away.

Scene 2

Kerry walks into the alcove where the vending machines are and sees Sandy getting a soda. Kerry stands facing her and says, "You're still here!" Sandy acts casual, reaching down for her can of soda and says, glancing only briefly at Kerry, "I was on my way out. Keep those kids from killing each other?" She carries on walking toward the door while opening her pop and glancing again only briefly at Kerry.

Kerry looks down, and begins fidgeting, playing with something in her hand, and says, "Yeah, one has a corneal abrasion, the other has a strained wrist". Sandy is walking away clearly expecting Kerry to follow her out. Kerry stays where she is, looks up and calls Sandy back with "Hey! You know I'm not, uh, very good at this."

Turning back, walking toward Kerry and now looking directly at her, Sandy says softly, "What, follow up?"

There's a small pause and Kerry asks tentatively, "Want to have lunch?" Sandy lightens the mood by looking like she's actually considering whether to say yes, then says, "No sushi." Taken aback and puzzled, Kerry says, "What?" and looks down. Sandy smiles and says, "I don't like sushi."

Finally picking up on the fact that Sandy's teasing her, Kerry looks up at her with a little smile and says, "OK, anything you want."

Playfully pointing at Kerry Sandy laughingly says, "I'm gonna remember you said that!"

Sandy hears Stan the Can singing and turns toward the desk area. "Why is he here? Somebody finally kick his butt?"

Stalling and staying put in hope of prolonging the contact, Kerry doesn't move…"What?” Sandy carries on out to the desk to where Stan is. Kerry continues to watch as Sandy talks to Stan and Susan.

Scene 3

We see Kerry and Sandy walking toward us down a crowded sidewalk the next day.

Kerry is saying, "I'm sure it was on this block. It's called Nazeem. It's got a kind of blue awning."

Sandy says, "Well, I don't see it." and Kerry says, "We must have missed it."

They keep walking, looking at each other as they speak, and enjoying getting the feel of each other's sense of humor. Sandy says, "Ahhh, I don't like Indian food anyway."

"Well, what.... Why didn't you say something?"

"I just did!" and both women are grinning at each other.

They stop and look across the street as Kerry says, "All right, well, why don't we go to that Italian place across the street. They've got great risotto." They begin to head there when Sandy says, "Well, wait a minute. That'd be great if it weren't closed."

In mock exasperation "Kind of a pain the ass, you know that?" as they start walking again. Looking at Kerry with a huge grin Sandy says, "Some say!" and Kerry responds with "I'm starting to regret this whole thing." To which Sandy, swaggering a little and grinning hugely, replies, "It's too bad. I'm starving!" They keep walking and Sandy goes on grinning as Kerry says, "OK. Let's just forget about looking for a decent place here. Why don't we go home and order something in?" They stop facing each other and Sandy says, "I like a take-charge kind of girl!" With a small smile Kerry says, "My apartment?" and Sandy says, "Lead the way" as they walk on.
