"Breathe
Your Name" by Sixpence None The Richer is playing on the radio,
while Sandy is hard at work rearranging a tiny, cluttered office. She
hoists a box up onto a table in the middle of the floor.
Kerry
breezes into the room. "Need some help?" She is wearing a coat
and a backpack, apparently ready to head off to work.
"Nope,
I got it. You need to stay out of this room for a few days though,"
Sandy warns, as Kerry starts rustling through a pile of papers on the
desk against the wall. Kerry probably knows this, but Sandy can't help
being protective. They are facing each other.
"Are
you nesting?" Kerry teases.
Sandy
seems to blush. "I'm painting a room," she states
emphatically, shrugging off Kerry's crazy accusation.
"Nesting..."
Kerry continues to tease, making the most of her girlfriend's
sensitivity and discomfort. She finds what she's looking for, and turns
away.
Sandy
is amused in spite of herself. "Don't you have to go to work?"
She steps forward to set a bucket up on the table, and smirks at Kerry,
who knows that Sandy doesn't really want her to go. A tender expression
sneaks onto Sandy's face for a half second, unobserved.
As
Kerry makes sure she has found the right paper, she continues to tease
Sandy, "Chicago's toughest female firefighter braves burning
buildings and dirty diapers." She really does sound way too pleased
with herself.
Sandy,
listening over her shoulder as she continues to move things, turns away
suddenly to grab the nearest teddy bear, hurls it at Kerry, and laughs,
"Get out of here!"
Kerry
surprises her by catching it. "Hey," she jokes, "I hope
you don't treat the baby like that." She throws the teddy bear back
at Sandy, who has to flinch to catch it, and whips back around, amazed
and impressed by Kerry's arm.
Kerry
leaves laughing, leaves Sandy to "paint a room", or nest...
-----
At the ER, an old man is being brought in. Medic tells them he complains of chest pains and shortness of breath during sex with his wife. Kerry asks how old he is. He's 93. Kerry asks Dr. Kovac if he could give them a hand. They transfer the man onto the bed with Kerry's "Go."
Gallant
receives a paper and explains to Kerry that it's Harkins, he'd been
helping her with her reading. Kovacs asks if they still need him. Kerry
asks him if he can check a post intubation film in the ICU. Kerry hands
the chart over and says she'll go "check on his wife to make sure
she survived their sexual encounter" (with a smirk).
Haleh
notices some blood on Kerry’s lab coat. "Dr. Weaver. Your coat.
You brushed against some blood." Kerry looks down in devastation
but tries to compose herself. She walks out of the room.
-----
Kerry
is in a dark exam room and rushes over to the Sonosight. She sits on the
edge of the bed and unzips her pants. She grabs the gel and squirts it
on her stomach. With a more than concerned look on her face, she fiddles
with the bottons and flips on the machine. Scratching noises play as she
searches for her baby & the heartbeat. You see a silhouette of a
still baby with no fluttering beat.
Abby busts open the door and is surprised to find Kerry. "Ah, excuse me." says Abby. There’s a moment of awkward silence. She walks over to Kerry. "I need the Sonosight."
Kerry is focused on the image on the monitor and she tells Abby, "I can't find the heartbeat."
Abby
takes the Sono and says, "Let me try....How many weeks?" She
is looking for the heartbeat.
Kerry is looking at the monitor and tells her, "Fourteen. I think it..."
There lies the image of the baby completely still with no heartbeat.
Kerry pauses and tells her to "try a different angle."
But Abby knows the baby is not alive. "I'm sorry."
Kerry
says "Try again." Abby tries again but there’s nothing.
"It's not there. Are you bleeding?" There is a pause, Kerry is
still staring at the monitor in disbelief. "Are you bleeding?"
Abby asks again.
"A little. I thought I was just spotting." Kerry replies. She looks weak.
"Do
you want me to call your OB?" Abby asks. Kerry pulls her pants up
and tells Abby, "No. I think it's better if it happens
naturally.”
Abby feels for Kerry. "Dr. Weaver you should go home."
Kerry is stilling looking down. "Just..um...bring me some scrubs when you get a chance.”
She
looks back up at the monitor, staring blankly as Abby walks out with the
machine.
-----
Kerry is standing up tying the drawstring on her scrubs. A nurse knocks on the door. “Dr. Weaver?” She opens the door and catches Kerry off guard. She turns to her, "Yeah."
The nurse tells her that "security" wants to talk to her.
"I'll
be right there," Kerry tells her. The nurse closes the door as she
quietly looks down at Kerry. Kerry finishes shoving her old clothes into
a plastic bag and putting it under a bed. She grabs her crutch, takes a
deep breath and goes back to work.
-----
Medics bring in a girl and begin to transfer her onto a bed. Kerry asks, "Why is she in restraints?" They say she passed out, fell and hit her head and was flailing and incoherent. She sees the girl is deaf. Kerry takes Abby's stethoscope. Abby says the girl looks familiar and she thinks Dr. Lewis has treated her before. She asks Kerry if she wants her to get Dr. Lewis. Kerry tells Abby "no." Abby shakes her head and walks away. She knows Kerry should rest.
She
holds her hand down and removes the restraints. Kerry signs H and I. The
girl signs hi back. Kerry finds out what is wrong with the girl.
-----
Kerry is sewing up Rosemary. Her mind is elsewhere, because she ignores Haleh.
Haleh
notices that Kerry is distracted and asks, "Dr. Weaver, are you ok?
She's down at 80 systolic."
Kerry
finishes her suture and takes a quick breath out before she sits next to
the girl. Kerry tells her she has a bladder infection that spread to her
kidneys" and asks is she is "sexually active." Kerry
speaks to the girls and finds out the girl doesn't want her parents to
know she is having sex.
Kerry
understands. "Your parents don't need to know, but we do need
to..." Kerry gasps and turns her head in obvious pain. She takes a
couple breaths and continues to talk to the girl. "We need to tell
them that you're sick." Rosemary signs. Kerry tells her, "For
at least 6 hours." She gets her crutch and holds the girls hand on
her way up. Kerry tells Haleh to take her to CT and she'll talk to her
when she gets back. Kerry starts to walk down the hall and stops in
mid-stride with another bad cramp. Gallant interrupts her and says he
wants her to take a look at a patient. "Get Carter!" Kerry
says as she walks away. Gallant says he's busy and Kerry tells him to
find another attending.
-----
In the drug Lock-up, Kerry is breathing through some very hard cramps.
Abby sees her from the hall and walks in. "How long have you been cramping?"
Kerry tells her, "About an hour."
"How much bleeding?” Abby asks.
Kerry pauses for a moment, "Four pads."
Abby tries to get Kerry to think realistically. "OK we need to get you upstairs. Do you want me to call Sandy?"
Kerry shakes her head and says, "She's at work." She looks down.
But Abby knows better and tells Kerry, “She'd want to be with you.”
Kerry is reluctant to make a fuss. "I can't. I don't want to check in upstairs. I don't want it all over the hospital."
"I think you need a D&C right away." says a concerned Abby.
Kerry insists, “No, no..just...call me when the OB resident comes down for a consult."
"I'm calling Maynard." says Abby as she opens the door.
Kerry
closes her eyes as Abby walks out.
----
Kerry is lying in bed as Abby walks in and hands Dr. Maynard a sheet of paper.
Maynard
scribbles on the chart and says, "Everything is fine. Kerry you
should really think about…" Kerry interrupts, "A pelvic,
rest, return if abdominal pain, fever, increased bleeding...(more
medical talk)...I know what to do.”
Maynard
tells her, "I was going to say you should take some time off. Come
see me in three days." She walks out.
Abby is still in the room and she asks Kerry, "Can I get you anything?"
Kerry
shakes her head. Abby sees that Kerry needs something. "Do
you want me to try call Sandy at work?" Kerry shakes her head
again, but looks at Abby. Abby starts to walk away.
Kerry
tries to say something. "Abby...Cou..."She can barely get the
words out to ask Abby for help. Abby takes a deep breath and says,
"I can give you a ride home in about an hour."
"Thanks." Kerry looks so sad.
Abby
walks out and Rosemary is walking the halls and sees Kerry through the
door as it closes.
-----
Rosemary
is lying in bed. Kerry walks in and signs "Hi" to Rosemary.
She asks her how she is. She signs to Kerry and Kerry says,
"Good." She sits down next to Rosemary. Kerry asks her if she
called her parents. Rosemary says she doesn't want to disappoint her
parents anymore because she does anyway by being deaf.
Kerry
gives Haleh the chart and turns to Rosemary. Rosemary asks her if she
could call her parents for her. Kerry says "Yes".
Rosemary
signs to Kerry.
"Why was I a patient? You saw me." Kerry says. Rosemary tugs on her gown and nods.
Kerry looks at her and looks down at her own hands. She sighs, "I was…"
You see Kerry's hand drop down behind her other hand to show a baby leaving the womb. Then she cradles her hands to sign that she lost her baby. Kerry slowly rests her hands on the girls’ bed. Rosemary looks at her and her eyes tear up. She puts her hand over Kerry's. The camera slowly moves up to show Kerry's face as she starts to cry. She drops her head on their hands and sobs. Rosemary strokes Kerry's hair as they fade out.
